Function / Content

This series consists of surveyors' field books which record the survey information of the areas, notes and activities of surveyors. Included in the field books are references to the type of terrain, vegetation and type of soil. Some field books also record weather, lunar, solar or astronomical observations. The date range of most of the field books is within a 2 year period of the start date, although some books have been annotated at a later date by surveyors or clerks, as indicated by the long date range of some of the books. Of particular note are field books A-R which relate to the Goyder survey party of Darwin in 1869. Many of the field books also contain sketches such as a drawing of the Moonta ship at harbour (Item No. H), which records an incident on 25 May 1869 where Bennett was speared (Item No. K), and which includes a diagram of a campsite with location of flagstaff (Item No. X). One field book appears to have been used to record despatches in 1871 and 1872 (Item No. B17). Item Nos 1401 to 1405 relate to A Poeppel's survey of the Northern Territory and Queensland Border in 1884.
